Maxxis British Motocross Championship
Round 5 – Lyng, Norfolk – July 12th

Anderson Increases Championship MX1 Lead

Despite qualifying in a lowly 5th position Brad Anderson powered his 450cc Honda to a convincing overall victory in the MX1 class at the demanding Lyng venue on Sunday. After the initial race was red flagged when Lewis Rose was left injured in the middle of the track due to a first corner incident, it was CAS Honda substitute rider Bryan MacKenzie who lead the field for the opening five laps after the restart. Close in behind were Mildenhall’s Carl Nunn, Buildbase CCM factory rider Tom Church and the hard charging Anderson, with Kawsaki’s Gareth Swanepeol making up for a mediocre start. MacKenzie succumbed to the pressure on lap six and crashed allowing Church through to head the pack. By half race distance it was Swanepeol who forced his way to the front , while Nunn made a mistake and went to ground on the MVR-D Suzuki allowing Anderson into third. When Church also crashed on lap twelve Anderson inherited second and the remounted Nunn moved into clinch the final podium place.

Race two for the MX1 class was a gate to flag victory for Anderson as he rode his PAR Homes Honda to overall victory on the day and increased his championship lead to 46 points over James Noble. MacKenzie was second as the race unfolded, with Relentless Suzuki’s Scott Columb third. The New Zealander pushed his way past on lap three and maintained the position until the closing laps when he was overhauled by opening race winner Swanepeol. Church had another strong ride on the British built CCM machine to finish fourth, and Nunn overcame a disastrous start which saw him languishing in eleventh at the end of lap one to claim sixth at the finish, and third overall on the day which moves him up to fourth in the standings after round five.

The outcome of the MX2 class was never in doubt when series leader Stephen Sword laid down his marker in qualifying with a blistering lap over one and half seconds faster than his nearest rival. And so it proved when he took start to finish wins on the 250cc Red Bull KTM in both races to extend his advantage in the title race to 55 points. In race one it was Sword’s KTM team mate Jake Nicholls who took second place after passing Mel Pocock’s UTAG Yamaha on lap two. A three way fight between Martin Barr, Relentless Suzuki, Neville Bradshaw on the DB Honda, and MVR-D Suzuki mounted Mattis Karro kept the large trackside crowd on their feet. The Latvian came out on top to take third with Pocock fourth, and PAR Homes Scott Elderfield came through the field from a lowly fourteenth on lap one to snatch sixth less than a second behind Barr

The second outing for the MX2 was no less frenetic. Pocock, Barr, Bradshaw, Nicholls and Samsung Yamaha’s Wayne Smith raced handlebar to handlebar to grab the lower podium positions. It was Nicholls who stole second on the very last lap from Barr after a gruelling 35 minutes racing, a result which pushes the Ipswich based rider into third place in the championship just nine points adrift of Bradshaw.

The Norfolk crowd were also treated to the inaugural running of the MD Racing Products sponsored British Veterans Championship. It was a welcome return to the top of the podium for former multi British champion Rob Herring who took two convincing victories on his 450cc LPE Kawasaki. Lowestoft’s Paul Bennett was second overall with a brace of runner spots, and Stephen Elford claimed third.
